Having both containerd and rkt in CNCF would be a great outcome for the CNCF, for Kubernetes, and for the container and cloud ecosystems. Each runtime has its own strengths and use cases, and I hope that induction into CNCF unlocks opportunities for broader collaboration. As for Heron, I'm not seeing the demand for Storm/Heron. For example, Google trends: Spark still has a lot of steam, and AIUI the trend (e.g., using Apache Beam) is towards unified batch and streaming. More broadly, though, I would like to see CNCF become a good home for container/orchestrator-friendly data-processing platforms, as that critical category of workloads benefits from closer integration with the underlying orchestration platform. --Brian

In summary, we are offering to build (initially) a proof-of-concept implementation of a CNCF-centric CI Workflow Platform to make it easy to compose and run cross-project continuous integration workflows composed out of re-usable and configurable building blocks (which incorporate other CI systems like Jenkins, CircleCI, Travis, Zuul, etc). The workflow platform is based on ContainerOps, which is already open sourced, and which we are willing to donate to the CNCF (together with the additional work proposed here).

Alexis, I would also like to have the rkt maintainers do a short presentation on this call to propose donating the project into CNCF as well.
As container execution engines, rkt and containerd are similar projects, but follow very different architectural/design choices. At the same time, they strive for broader compatibility with each other and the ecosystem by implementing and working with
standards like those developed in OCI or integrating with Kubernetes.
I think this is an excellent opportunity for us to show that we will foster and encourage projects within CNCF that overlap or compete but are critical to the core of cloud-native systems.
