TOC meeting tomorrow

Liz Rice

Hi everyone,

Apologies, but I am going to bail out of tomorrow's TOC meeting - there are a number of very pressing deadlines demanding my attention this week and something is going to have to give. In the run up to KubeCon I imagine several of you are under similar pressures so I hope you understand and forgive my absence.

Question about action required from SIG-Security for OPA graduation

Torin Sandall

Hello TOC,

Hopefully this is an easy question to answer 😅

Background:

- We're in the process of preparing a proposal for OPA to graduate from Incubation. As part of the process, we're putting together a due diligence document for review. We'll be able to share that soon.

- SIG-Security completed an assessment of OPA in October 2019: https://github.com/cncf/sig-security/pull/275. The assessment yielded useful feedback that has since been addressed. There haven't been any significant (design or architectural) changes to the project since the assessment (nor are there any planned).

The question to the TOC:

- What action is required from SIG-Security in the context of OPA's graduation process given they completed the assessment of OPA in October 2019?

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Thanks!

-Torin

Also +1 from an end user.

We are using Thanos in my company from more than a year now and it has serve us perfectly. It hooks very nicely on Prometheus and its simplicity is a strong quality.

Re: Proposal for a new "Steering Committee Charter"

Matt

Thank you for the feedback and for reviewing the proposal.

I agree that the doc is light on continuity details.  We have a lot of prior art on projects that face growth challenges but very little on the end state in 'bad' cases.

I think it is best to talk through scenarios live.  Unfortunately(*) I am on zoomcation till month end but could join a toc call in August. Until then we have email....

Thanks Alexis for this doc. Overall I am supportive and I think for some projects this is a good tool to have that will aid in graduation.

The one part that I am most concerned about is the section on continuity planning. My personal view is that some projects that may wish to use the steering committee to satisfy graduation requirements may not be able to produce a realistic continuity plan. This will clearly end up being a subjective assessment of the TOC to some extent, but I think we should try to have very clear guidance on what a valid continuity plan would look like as a graduation requirement.

Thanks,
Matt

The model proposed in the doc is intended to provide 'best practice'
for projects and governance through graduation and beyond. It is not
intended to be mandatory.  It is consistent with our existing CNCF TOC
Principles.

The model addresses some of the questions raised in this github thread

I welcome commentary in the doc or on this list.

+1 from an end user. We run Cortex for more than a year in production and since then it solves some pain points - primarily scalability issues - which we had with Prometheus. A promotion to the incubation stage is well deserved.

Re: Thanos Public Comment Period

Joseph Irving

We've been using thanos in production since version v0.1.0 and it's greatly improved our metrics and monitoring stack, being able to aggregate all our metrics under one endpoint has made it far easier for developers to find the metrics they want, while giving us the stability and flexibility to manage a fleet of per team tailored prometheus instances. We fully support it going to the incubation stage.

Re: Thanos Public Comment Period

+1 from an end user - Thanos solves important issues. Especially in larger environments, it's almost a necessity to use Thanos (or Cortex).  If we then look at the quality and usability, it is incubation worthy. Hopefully I'll be able to share my experiences using Thanos in a large organisation in the near future as I'm waiting approval for that.
