K8s Certification Update - February 10, 2017

Hello Kubernetes Certification Working Group! In November, the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) launched a new training, certification and Kubernetes Managed Service Provider (KMSP) program. Since that announcement, a team of K8s experts have been busy defining an online, proctored certification program to be run by The Linux Foundation for CNCF. Below is an update on the certification progress so far. We are still looking for volunteers to help with beta testing the exams. If you have interest and expertise please consider subscribing to the Kubernetes Certification Working Group list. We’ll be reaching out to volunteers as the process progresses. Overview
Scope Definition for the Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA) exam A certified K8s administrator can work proficiently to design, install, configure, and manage a Kubernetes production-grade cluster. They will have an understanding of key concepts such as Kubernetes networking, storage, security, maintenance, logging and monitoring, application lifecycle, troubleshooting, API object primitives and the ability to establish basic use-cases for end users. JTA Development 13 K8s experts from 9 different companies participated in a facilitated 2-day DACUM (Developing a Curriculum) workshop in early December and defined:
5% Scheduling 5% Logging / Monitoring 8% Application Lifecycle Management 11% Cluster Maintenance 12% Security 7% Storage 10% Troubleshooting 19% Core Concepts 11% Networking 12% Installation & Configuration

In general I think we should have a free online course of kubernetes fundamentals (may be a minimal version of Kubernetes fundamentals [1]) something similar to this [2] to promote kubernetes. Is there any plan for special discounts for Linux Foundation/Student membership ?

Just to clarify, I am unaware of an MOOC. I was part of an effort December to create what I believe is an intermediate level test. I believe she was asking us to beta test that particular test. Again, I thought that test was still being 'developed', meaning the training, etc. Not sure exactly what were signing up for. Regards. Ron

We are working to develop a MOOC, to be hosted on edX, which is the platform we use to reach a global audience with free training. It will be a broad based introductory course that provides a foundation for folks who are brand new to Kubernetes. Introduction to Linux and Introduction to OpenStack are two of our existing courses that give an indication of how it might look. We're working on developing the course and the goal is to have it

Ron (et al.), there are several things: - LF will develop a free course for intro to k8s, this will be available don eDx and is known as a MOOC. - The LF course LFS258, currently called “Kubernetes Fundamentals” available now (which to be transparent, I wrote). -The certification. What you and I and others participated in was a workshop to help build that certification. I don’t think it is done and Liz says they are aiming for June/July. There will need to be beta-testers of that exam. The sign up link she put at the end of her email is a signup for the course LFS258, it is not a sign up for the beta-testing of the certification exam. LF’s plan is to extend LFS258 content to cover all topics defined in the scope definition so that the course can be used as an exam prep. That’s my understanding of things, hope that helps. -sebastien

I'd like to inform Liz also this way that our company (Component Soft) is also interested in participating the Kubernetes beta exam process with 2-3 engineers. We did the same in last spring with the Certified Openstack Administrator (COA) beta exam which happened to be managed also by Liz. And a related and important question: it seams so that Docker, the company, is somehow not able to create a Docker certification which would otherwise be very useful for the whole industry. Has the Linux Foundation no plans to create one? I think it would not only be a very useful service for the Docker and hence the Kubernetes ecosystem but also a substantial revenue source for the Foundation, especially if a related self-paced online Docker course would be also created. And training companies like ourselves could sell bundles of their live Docker trainings and this exam (as it happens with Openstack courses and the COA exam as well). Hi, Erno. Docker is a platinum member of CNCF and Solomon Hykes is a member of CNCF's Technical Oversight Committee. I think it would be extremely unlikely for CNCF or the LF to create a certification course without the active participation of the company that controls the technology. However, I'll forward your request to their VP Marketing and see what he thinks.

Hi Dan. OK, I see. Naturally an official Docker exam by Docker itself
would be the best especially in a similar online hands-on version.
My impression is that Docker doesn't have the resources for
creating the certification, they obviously focus on other areas.
If so, it would be logical that Docker would directly cooperate
with the Linux Foundation (similarly to Openstack and Kubernetes)
which has the infrastructure, expertize and hopefully the
resources to create a joint Docker exam in the foreseeable future,
e.g. in this year. I guess there would be substantial number of
volunteers to support them.

JTA Development 13 K8s experts from 9 different companies participated in a facilitated 2-day DACUM (Developing a Curriculum) workshop in early December and defined: * 10 subject Domains and their % weight on the exam: 5% Scheduling 5% Logging / Monitoring 8% Application Lifecycle Management 11% Cluster Maintenance 12% Security 7% Storage 10% Troubleshooting 19% Core Concepts 11% Networking 12% Installation & Configuration * 55 Topics, aka subdomains * The exam environment and technical specs * An estimated exam length of 4 hours Exam Item Development 14 K8s experts from 13 different companies participated in a second, intensive 2-day item writing workshop facilitated by a performance-based assessment expert in mid-December and: * drafted 44 exam items based on the Domains and Topics defined during the JTA; items are logged in a private GitHub repo * chose 34 of the best Items targeted for the exam by weighted Domain * applied a difficulty rating of Easy, Moderate, Hard for each item * agreed upon a K8s Exam environment proposal Timeline for the Next Steps * Exam item refinement is ongoing * 10 week process to complete items set up, exam environment, and develop the grading scripts. (thru mid April). * 8 weeks post-setup to conduct the alpha/beta testing, determine passing score,and set up exam portal (mid April to early June) * Exam launch targeted for the 2nd week of June We’ve also made available (in partnership with The Linux Foundation) a self-paced online training course that aims to prepare users for the K8s exam.
